Become a life-changing speech pathologist. Speech Pathologists provide valuable assistance to people with a wide range of communication needs, including speaking, listening, reading, writing, non-verbal communication, fluency and voice. They also help individuals with swallowing and eating needs to enhance their health, wellbeing and participation in everyday life. La Trobe's Master of Speech Pathology gives you the knowledge and skills to help people realise their communication and swallowing potential. Learn how to observe communication and mealtimes in everyday settings, conduct assessments, interpret clinical data and develop interventions. You'll also gain hands-on experience working with a range of individual clients. As you learn, you'll take part in clinical workshops, guided demonstration sessions and simulation activities. You'll also work with service providers to help people with communication and swallowing needs participate and feel included in their community.

Structure

To attain the Master of Speech Pathology, students will be required to complete 240 credit points in total consisting of: 240 credit points core subjects

Standard entry requirements

  • Postgraduate: Prerequisites - Undergraduate requirements - Successful completion of an Australian bachelor degree (or equivalent).
  • International: IELTS - 7.5 < 7.0 - 7.5 IELTS (Academic) with no individual band less than 7.0.

Recognition

The Master of Speech Pathology is conditionally accredited by Speech Pathology Australia (SPA). Graduates of the Master of Speech Pathology may be eligible to apply for certified practising membership with Speech Pathology Australia. Membership may have additional or ongoing requirements beyond the completion of the degree. Please contact the relevant professional body for details.

Study pathways

Students who are offered a place in this course but do not have a background in human biosciences (anatomy and physiology) and linguistics (phonetics and grammar) are strongly recommended to complete a bridging course starting in late January. Students who have a background in human biosciences and linguistics may apply for advanced standing in the bridging course.

Further information

Each intake of students includes a certain proportion of positions that are reserved for international and La Trobe University students. All students are expected to undertake a four-week bridging course starting on 23 January 2017 at the Melbourne (Bundoora) Campus. In addition, all applicants are required to provide the Supplementary Application Form from the How to Apply section below, which includes: a personal statement (250 words), CV, and 250-500 word problem-based learning (PBL) statement outlining their method of learning and their understanding of the PBL approach. Please provide certified copies of transcripts (whether complete or incomplete) which must include a grading scheme (results interpretation) page. There are no Commonwealth Supported Places available for this course.
