Progress in atmospheric science relies heavily on the analysis of data produced by satellite-borne and other types of instruments designed by physicists. Atmospheric scientists need a broad scientific basis as well as experience in computing. With the growing field of climate science and increasing demand for tools and instruments to predict and monitor the environment, atmospheric scientists use their broad range of skills to contribute toward innovations in design and prototyping of instruments, and the analysis and interpretation of data.

Structure

  • To qualify for award of the degree of Bachelor of Science with a Atmospheric Science major, students complete 144 credit points and satisfy all course requirements for the degree outlined in the course structure below.a) 60 credit points of common course core subjects
  • andb) 84 credit points of core subjects as outlined below.c) Students who have achieved a mark of 65% or more in NSW HSC Chemistry (or equivalent) must select CHEMISTRY OPTION 1. All other students must enrol in CHEMISTRY OPTION 2.Students should consult with the Academic Program Director directly to help in planning out their program of study.Students who have completed CHEM104 and CHEM105 and are proceeding to CHEM211, CHEM212 and CHEM213, must(a) have obtained marks of at least 80% in both CHEM104 and CHEM105,(b) complete additional directed study by two weeks before the start of the session in which the CHEM21X subjects are taken. For information about the additional directed study materials contact the CHEM104 Subject Coordinator and(c) obtain permission of Head of Students.

DOMESTIC STUDENTS - ATAR-BASED ADMISSION OPTIONS Guaranteed entry selection ranks Entry to this course can be gained with: Minimum ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admission Rank) International Baccalaureate (IB) Interstate equivalent (such as the Victorian ENTER or Queensland OP) Results in an overseas qualification deemed equivalent to Australian year 12 The minimum score for guaranteed entry (or for consideration if this course has limited places) is an ATAR-Selection Rank of 78 or an IB of 28. This includes the effect of adjustment factors. Adjustment factors, such as the subjects you are studying, the area in which you live or equity and access schemes, are taken into consideration and these will be combined with your ATAR to adjust your selection rank and make it higher than your ATAR. These adjustments used to be called bonus points. Ideally, students will have studied Mathematics Extension 1, Chemistry. INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS Applicants need to have achieved the required score in a qualification equivalent to the completion of 13 years of schooling in Australia. In order to succeed in your chosen course, it is assumed you have completed relevant subjects in your senior high school studies or other relevant qualifications. This is particularly important for degrees which have a strong basis in Mathematics or Science.

Recognition

The Bachelor of Science degree conforms to the requirements for membership of the Australian Institute of Physics.
