Musculoskeletal physiotherapy is one of the oldest sub-disciplines in physiotherapy, yet it's pioneered modern methods and techniques for current evidence-based practice. Australia needs specialised professionals who can make their mark in this growing and in-demand field. La Trobe's Master of Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy is a program designed for practising physiotherapists who want to gain advanced clinical skills in the field of musculoskeletal physiotherapy. Through a blend of online and set residential block learning, you'll learn from leading industry clinical leaders, academic staff and colleagues at one of Australia's longest established physiotherapy schools. You will also work under the supervision of recognised sports and exercise physiotherapists to gain invaluable clinical practice experience in hospital outpatient departments and private physiotherapy clinics.

Structure

To qualify for the award of Master of Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy, students must complete 120 credit points consisting of: 120 core credit-points

  • Advanced Clinical Sciences in Physiotherapy
  • Professional Development for Advanced Physiotherapy
  • Professional Development in Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy
  • Search and Evaluate Evidence (sport and Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy)

Standard entry requirements

  • Postgraduate: Prerequisites - Course specific requirements - Applicants must have a full current Australian Physiotherapy registration or be eligible for full registration as a physiotherapist with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA). Evidence must be submitted when applying.
  • Postgraduate: Prerequisites - Course specific requirements - Specialisation - compulsory: Physiotherapy
  • Postgraduate: Prerequisites - Undergraduate requirements - Successful completion of an Australian bachelor degree (or equivalent).

Recognition

Graduates of the Master of Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy may apply for membership and the title of APA Musculoskeletal Physiotherapist with the Australian Physiotherapy Association (APA). Membership and titling may be subject to additional or ongoing requirements beyond completion of the degree. Please contact the relevant professional body for details.

Further information

Students must complete the two-week University-based subject Clinical Reasoning and Manual Physiotherapy (PTY5CRM TE:PE W5-10, first two weeks of February) before commencing PTY5APM: Advanced Practice in Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy.
