This specialised program provides you with training in the practice of art therapy, which combines art and counselling within a clinical, therapeutic or community context. Art therapy is used for the treatment and healing of developmental, emotional and psychological problems or disorders. It is also used as a wellbeing intervention for groups and communities experiencing distress.


To qualify for the award of Master of Art Therapy, students must complete a total of 240 credit points across 2 years.

Standard entry requirements

Successful completion of an Australian bachelor degree (or equivalent). Applicants must provide a written application and submit a portfolio demonstrating their skills with a range of visual art media (Compilation of 10-15 photographs of your own original artwork). At least one year of human services work experience such as counselling and/or community work (paid or voluntary). Prospective students who do not meet the counselling skills requirements for entry into the Master of Art Therapy may pathway through our Introduction to Counselling Skills Course. Specialisation - compulsory: Fine arts, graphic design, art education, psychology, counselling, social work, occupational therapy or nursing.


The Master of Art Therapy is accredited by the Australian Counselling Association (ACA). Graduates of the Master of Art Therapy may apply for registration with the Australian Counselling Association (ACA). Professional registration may require an application to the professional body and may have additional or ongoing requirements beyond the completion of the degree. Please contact the relevant professional body for details. Graduates of the Master of Art Therapy may apply for membership with the Australian, New Zealand and Asian Creative Arts Therapies Association (ANZACATA). Membership may be subject to additional or ongoing requirements beyond completion of the degree. Please contact the relevant professional body for details.
