The Australian Government has announced a new initiative that will benefit international students from India. The ‘Maitiri’ (friendship) initiatives will boost cultural, educational and community ties between Australia and India. A statement released on 14 February 2022 outlined a new set of initiatives, including a Maitri Scholarships Program. The statement says:

“The $11.2 million Maitri Scholarships Program will attract and support high achieving Indian students to study at Australian universities. It will showcase Australia’s globally renowned academic and research institutions, particularly in science, technology, engineering, mathematics and health.”

A further $3.5 million will be offered under the Maitri grants and fellowships program for professionals. under the Maitri cultural partnership, $6.1 million will help boost the role of creative industries.

SBS Australia quoted Bhavika Unnadkat, the head of data governance and knowledge management at Energy Australia, saying: "This will be a great boost to the participation of students in STEMM programs. These scholarships/funds will help students to focus on studies rather than survival, especially after what COVID has done to the economy."

The initiative demonstrates the commitment to cooperation and exchange shared by Australia and India.

Australia’s student lifestyle and high-ranking universities have often been a drawcard for Indian students. The $11.2 million scholarships program is aimed to support Indian students to study at Australian universities over four years.

Successful students may have their education tuition fees paid for and a stiped to help with living costs.
