How to eat your weight in dumplings this Chinese New Year in Melbourne

Even though 2018 is more than a month old, Chinese New Year kicks off today and runs until February 25. Melbourne has a significant Chinese population and as such, there will be plenty to see, do and eat to commemorate the Year of the Dog.

The Victorian capital is food crazed and it would be wrong not to focus on the best dumplings in Melbourne! Here are some of our favourites to sink your teeth into.

    $

    Shanghai Village

If you’re after something cheap and cheerful, Shanghai Village can offer up 15 pork dumplings for less than a $10 note! A top pick for the CBD lunch crowd on a budget. Plus, it’s BYO!

    China Red

The causal younger sibling of Hutong, China Red borrows menu staples such as xiao-long-bao and salt and pepper squid, and pairs it with wall-mounted, touchscreens to place your order. Ultimate convenience at a great price.

    $$

    HuTong

The HuTong empire is famous in Melbourne and this is the venue that started it all. Spicy wontons in chilli sauce are delicious, as are the prawn and chive dumplings.

    Shandong Mama

Serving up uniquely wrapped dumplings with high quality ingredients, Shandong Mama has multiple venues across the city. Their specialty is fish dumplings, but they also have a Melbourne-themed option.

    I Love Dumplings Richmond

Wander down Church Street and I Love Dumplings Richmond will likely be packed to the brim with people of all kinds enjoying a large variety of pork, chicken, prawn, lamb, beef, fish and vegetarian dumplings. Best served with soy sauce and lashings of chilli oil.

    $$$

    Flower Drum

If any place can get away with charging over $20 for a solitary dumpling, it’s Flower Drum, arguably the best Chinese restaurant in Australia.
