Bachelor of Secondary Education (Science)

Type of institution: University/Higher Education Institution
Level: Undergraduate
CRICOS: 00212K

The Bachelor of Secondary Education is (Science) externally accredited by the ACT Teacher Quality Institute (TQI), allowing graduates to apply for graduate registration and work as a Secondary school teacher upon graduation. Registered Secondary teachers are professionals that are equipped with the knowledge and skills to teach young people in school settings from Year 7 to Year 12. This course was introduced in 2016, designed to bring together theory and practice through a school-based clinical model of teacher education that includes both instructional/theoretical and practical/applied components. The course incorporates school-based clinics for two Science, Technology/Engineering or Mathematics (STeM) discipline areas in the Australian curriculum. In addition, this course also includes embedded professional experience placements in each of the four years of the degree. The total number of professional placement days required to meet course completion requirements is 80. Strong partnerships with Directorate schools in Canberra enable the Faculty to deliver the school-based clinics, as well as develop capacity for teachers as researchers. Beyond the Directorate we also offer students professional experience placements in Catholic, Independent schools, local and out of area schools. Our course is taught by traditional academics who in the main were teachers before moving to academia, along with current teachers who are completing either a PhD or EdD. Our teaching is informed by research giving students both current and evidence-based instruction.
