Applied Mathematics is the basis for successful decision-making and problem solving independent of sector or industry; it can provide new insights into nature, technology and business and create a pathway for innovative solutions. Applied mathematics underpins a wide range of scientific and commercial enterprises, providing extensive career options. Just about every industry depends at some point on handling and interpreting data, and on predicting and modelling outcomes. Mathematical results drive policy and innovation. The Applied Mathematics major gives you quantitative skills that are in demand across all industries and serves as an initial preparation for employment as a professional mathematician.
Structure
- To qualify for award of the degree of Bachelor of Mathematics, students complete 144 credit points and satisfy all course requirements for the degree outlined in the course structure below:a) 78 credit points of core subjects listed below
- b) additional 300 and/or 400 level subjects from the Mathematics Schedule with a value of at least:i) 30 credit points
- 24 credit points of which may be from a major study in Applied Mathematics, Pure Mathematics, or Applied Statistics orii) 24 credit points if adding any other major study
- oriii) 18 credit points if adding a major study in Computer Science, outlined below.c) Elective subjects from either the Mathematics Schedule or the General Schedule, up to the degree total of 144 credit points. Students may choose to complete a minor from the General Schedule of Minors.d) No more than 60 credit points at 100-level.The Personal Academic Mentoring (PAM) service run by the School of Mathematics and Applied Statistics (SMAS) provides one on one advice tailored to each student’s particular case. Every student is automatically enrolled in the PAM program.Students may additionally consult with the Academic Program Director directly to help in planning out their program of study.

DOMESTIC STUDENTS - ATAR-BASED ADMISSION OPTIONS Guaranteed entry selection ranks Entry to this course can be gained with: Minimum ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admission Rank) International Baccalaureate (IB) Interstate equivalent (such as the Victorian ENTER or Queensland OP) Results in an overseas qualification deemed equivalent to Australian year 12 The minimum score for guaranteed entry (or for consideration if this course has limited places) is an ATAR-Selection Rank of 75 or an IB of 26. This includes the effect of adjustment factors. Adjustment factors, such as the subjects you are studying, the area in which you live or equity and access schemes, are taken into consideration and these will be combined with your ATAR to adjust your selection rank and make it higher than your ATAR. These adjustments used to be called bonus points. ASSUMED KNOWLEDGE AND RECOMMENDED STUDIES The University assumes students will have studied Mathematics Advanced and 2 units of English. Ideally, students will have studied Mathematics Extension 1. INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS Applicants need to have achieved the required score in a qualification equivalent to the completion of 13 years of schooling in Australia. In order to succeed in your chosen course, it is assumed you have completed relevant subjects in your senior high school studies or other relevant qualifications. This is particularly important for degrees which have a strong basis in Mathematics or Science.
