This degree allows students to study specialist aspects of psychology including abnormal psychology, learning, memory and attention, behavioural and cognitive neuroscience, applied psychology, perception, personality and intelligence, research methods and social and developmental psychology. Performance must be maintained at a distinction level to enter the fourth year of the degree. If students do not qualify for the fourth year, they are required to transfer to B Arts or B Science with a major in psychology. Registered psychologists are in high demand. These qualifications are required for entry into all professional psychology programs, such as postgraduate clinical training programs, which will qualify students to become a clinical psychologist. They also form the ideal base to pursue graduate research programs such as the PhD. Psychology is also offered as a major in B Arts, B Science and B Science (Advanced) (together with an additional Advanced Science major), B Liberal Arts and Science, B Medical Science, B Health Sciences, B Commerce (Liberal Studies) and combined Science degrees. All of these programs offer an APAC accredited psychology major. Students can then apply for fourth-year honours to be eligible for registration as psychologists.

Structure

In first year students must study Psychology and Mathematics with other subjects. In the second and third years students will specialise in Psychology, although they will also study other relevant areas. Academic performance must be maintained at a high level to enter the fourth year of the degree. Those who do not qualify for the fourth year may transfer to B Science with a major in Psychology.

Standard entry requirements

Year 12 or equivalent. Assumed knowledge: For Science stream: Mathematics. All students in the Science stream must take some units of study in mathematics during their undergraduate degree.

Recognition

Registration as a psychologist in Australia requires completion of an accredited four-year basic tertiary program in psychology. The Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC) carries out the accreditation of psychology courses. Full registration as a professional psychologist is overseen by the Psychology Board of Australia and requires a fifth and sixth year of graduate study in professional psychology, or one year of graduate study in professional psychology plus one year of a Board-approved internship, or two years of a Board approved internship.

Further information

Progression in the Bachelor of Psychology requires a minimum credit average in year one Psychology and a minimum distinction average in Psychology in each of second and third years. Students who do not satisfy these requirements are not able to continue in the BPsych course. These students will have the opportunity to transfer into another degree which allows a major in Psychology. Career opportunities: Examples include as a psychologist in the community, in industrial relations, training and development, consulting and human resources. Fourth-year graduates have the necessary training to obtain work in areas including schools, hospitals, prisons, developmental disabilities and social policy areas in the private and public sectors.
