The Graduate Diploma in Mental Health Nursing is for Registered Nurses who want to specialise in the progressive field of mental health nursing and develop the knowledge and practical skills needed to asses and deliver care to people experiencing mental health problems and mental illness. It explores psychosocial and behavioural sciences and the legal and ethical aspects of mental health nursing practice. Students gain valuable practical experience with an industry placement, preparing them for mental health care in a variety of health care settings. The qualification is offered online, with attendance required at some on-campus workshops.

Standard entry requirements
- Applicants are required to meet one of the following criteria:Employer Sponsored A current Practising Certificate with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia
- AND A letter of support from an employer confirming a training position within the area of mental health nursingUniversity Placement A recognised Bachelor degree in Nursing or equivalent from a recognised higher education institution
- AND A current Practising Certificate with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia
- AND a current Department for Human Services (DHS) Working With Children Check (WWCC)
- AND a criminal history check issued by an ACIC-accredited provider within the last 12 months
Study pathways
Students may elect to exit with a Graduate Certificate in Mental Health Nursing provided they have successfully completed 18 units of study of the required courses.
Further information
Due to the limited number of placements, applicants are requested to send their Statement of Employment, National Police Clearance and DCSI Child-related Clearance to the University as soon as possible after applying though SATAC. On entry to the qualification, students are required to confirm that they meet the 'Fitness to Practice in Clinical Placements' requirements.
