Renewable energy technologies are evolving rapidly. They include geothermal heat sources, carbon capture and storage, mineral sequestration, photovoltaics, polymer cells, oxyfuel technologies, and wind turbines. There is international demand for renewable energy technology and specialist engineering professionals with related skills in energy technical expertise as well as safety regulations. In Australia, growth in demand for engineers and technicians in the renewable energy sector is predicted to triple between 2008 and 2020. This pathway program will allow students to build on the knowledge gained from their TAFE Associate Degree of Engineering (Renewable Energy Technologies), and finish with a bachelor degree after one year of university study. Students will develop the business and technical skills required for a career as a renewable energy professional. Students will learn how to design and develop renewable/sustainable systems and co-ordinate with energy, technical and safety regulations.

Structure

The Bachelor of Technology (Renewable Energy Systems) is a fully integrated program in which TAFE NSW Higher Education provides the first two years of delivery via the Associate Degree of Applied Engineering (Renewable Energy Technologies), and the University of Newcastle provides the delivery of the final year of the program. Students with a completed Associate Degree in Applied Engineering (Renewable Energy Technologies) (or equivalent) will receive 160 units of advanced standing. In the final year of the program (80 units), undertaken at the University of Newcastle, students complete 30 units of core courses in calculus of science and engineering, electrical engineering design, and carbon accounting and energy auditing. Students also choose a major in either mechanical or electrical engineering, which consists of 50 units of compulsory courses.

Completion of the Associate Degree of Engineering (Renewable Energy Technologies) from TAFE NSW (or equivalent)

Recognition

The body knowledge and skills developed in this degree align with Engineers Australia Australian Engineering Competency Standards. Subject to course endorsement by Engineers Australia, graduates who enter into the third year of study at the University of Newcastle will be eligible for assessment as an Engineering Technologist on completion of the Bachelor degree. Students who continue their studies to complete a four-year Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) program will be eligible to achieve the status of Professional Engineer.
