This program is designed to develop skills and knowledge required to pursue a career in the graphic design industry. Students acquire strong creative thinking and technical expertise in finished art and typography, along with a thorough understanding of design critical thinking, problem solving, concept development and the design process. Students engage in a number of industry set briefs as well as work placement. Graduates may be employed as graphic artists, designers and finished artists and may specialise in a number of fields including corporate identity, book and magazine layout, advertising, branding, packaging, web design and exhibition design. Students may also progress to higher levels of study in graphic design related programs.

Standard entry requirements

  • Year 12 or equivalent
  • Units 3 and 4: a study score of at least 25 in English (EAL) or 20 in English other than EAL
  • Pre-selection kit
  • And portfolio.

Recognition

Students are able to join these organisation as a student member while studying, Australian Graphic Design Association AGDA Design Institute of Australia (DIA) (Eligibility for full membership is based on a points system). Graduates can apply for associate membership and full membership once they have obtained their professional experience.

Study pathways

Students can continue further studies after graduating, and gain exemptions in the following programs: Bachelor of Design (Digital Media) and Bachelor of Design (Communication Design). Eligible graduates of RMIT's Certificate IV in Design who achieve a minimum overall grade of Competency with Distinction (CDI) will be given automatic entry into first semester, first year only of the Associate degree program. Graduates of the following program/s may be eligible to apply for exemptions: Diploma and Advanced Diploma of Graphic Design.
