This double degree enables you to develop life-long learning skills and mathematical inquisitiveness while understanding emerging medical complexities. Biomedical research and the development of new biomedical products contribute to improving health outcomes worldwide. You will gain knowledge and skills to work as part of multidisciplinary teams in biomedical research, development and commercialisation. The Bachelor of Mathematics component of the double degree will provide opportunities to develop skills and knowledge in mathematics and the ability to apply mathematics, statistics, computational methods and operations research to real world problems.
Foundation studies in human systematic anatomy, biomedical skills, human cell and molecular biology, biochemistry, human physiology, principles of infection and immunity, and genes, genomes and genetics provide a knowledge base for Years 2 and 3 when students choose a major. There is the opportunity to undertake two minor areas of study and students may choose to complement scientific studies with units in exercise physiology, Indigenous issues, psychology, public health, or ethical issues related to gene technology. The Bachelor of Mathematics component requires a total of 192 credit points as follows: 96 credit points of core units, 96 credit points of a selected major.

Graduates may apply to undertake an Honours year in the Faculty of Health or the Science and Engineering Faculty. Students may be able to claim advanced standing for part of their course, on the basis of completed or partially completed studies, and other assessable learning outcomes.

Students will also require Hepatitis B vaccination prior to commencing the laboratory components in this course. Diphtheria, Measles, Mumps, Pertussis (Whooping Cough), Rubella, Tetanus and Varicella (Chicken Pox) vaccinations are mandatory for all students attending a Queensland Health facility for placement.
