Students undertake a structured program of study by coursework covering a range of social work issues. The Masters of Social Work (Professional Qualifying) also includes two placements in a social welfare agency. Students are provided with the professional knowledge and skills relating to the theory and practice of social work.

Structure
48 credit points by coursework. This course includes prescribed professional or clinical placements. Students may be required to undertake these placements away from the campus they are enrolled at, at their own expense. The Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW) also requires all students to demonstrate that they have attended 20 days of face-to-face, on-campus study during their course.

Standard entry requirements
- Completion of an approved AQF level 7 bachelor degree in a discipline other than social work
- Or equivalent. Students must obtain a Suitability to Work with Children Card (which involves a criminal history check undertaken by the Queensland Police) before the start of the first placement and maintain currency of the same throughout their course.
