Chemistry is the central science that enables us to understand our world at the molecular level. The ability to understand the relationship between structure and function of molecules is critical to understanding the processes of life, of the natural world and of the industrial world.The Bachelor of Science major in Chemistry will give you the knowledge and skills to apply chemistry across the full range of technically-based disciplines including physics, molecular biology, life sciences, geochemistry, environmental science, engineering, and health sciences. These skills include both analytical and problem-solving skills, as well as expertise in using sophisticated laboratory instrumentation, all of which are highly valued by employers in all sectors of the economy.

Structure

The Bachelor of Science requires successful completion of at least 144 credit points from one of the majors below.1) 36 credit points of common first year subjects2) One major from the list below consisting of 108 credit points3) A maximum of 60 credit points of 100-level subjects4) Complete a minimum of 24 credit points of 300-level subjects.5) Students must have a grade of Pass (not Pass Supplementary) or higher in at least 24 credit points of 300-level core subjects which form part of a Science major.Chemistry RuleStudents who have achieved a mark of 65% or more in NSW HSC Chemistry (or equivalent) must select CHEM101 in Autumn and CHEM102 in Spring. All other students must select CHEM104 in Autumn and CHEM105 in Spring.Students who have completed CHEM104 and CHEM105, and wish to enrol in electives CHEM211 or CHEM212, must (a) have obtained marks of at least 80% in both CHEM104 and CHEM105, (b) complete additional directed study by two weeks before the start of the session in which the CHEM21X subjects are taken and (c) obtain permission of Head Of Students. For information about the additional directed study materials contact the CHEM104 Subject Coordinator.Mid-year entry in the Bachelor of Science must be in consultation with the Head of Students and due to the sequencing of subjects may take an addition session of study.

Applicants need to have achieved the required score in a qualification equivalent to the completion of 13 years of schooling in Australia.
