Master of Rolling Stock Engineering

University of Wollongong

Type of institution: University/Higher Education Institution
Level: Postgraduate
CRICOS: 00102E

The Master of Rolling Stock Engineering is designed to provide further education for engineering graduates and professional engineers interested in pursuing a career as a rolling stock engineer involved in the design, construction, operation and maintenance sectors. The degree accelerate the career development process and produces rolling stock professionals with the capabilities to practice as valuable members in a broad range of rail organisations. The majority of students are employed in the rail industry, however a support program is available to students without an industry contact. This degree The Master of Rolling Stock Engineering has been developed to provide a structured approach to learning and development. You will learn from staff who are at the forefront of their disciplines and fields of research and industry experts with extensive rail experience in workshops and discussion forums, providing you with invaluable networking opportunities. You will learn to use established predictive methods (e.g. models, rules, software, standards) to generate system specifications and evaluate the performance of component systems in rolling stock (including braking, traction, containment, communication, motive power, power transmission, and train control). You will also be able to provide input into these predictive methods to create or generate system specifications at a whole system level (i.e. consist/train set), having an awareness of rolling stock operating environment parameters or constraints (i.e. regulatory framework, safety, community expectations, environmental impact, funding, human factors, compatibility, capacity, and capability).

Designed for

Rail engineers

Structure

The Master program is offered on a part-time basis by distance education but does involve a face-to-face workshop at the commencement of each subject. The key areas covered (traction, vehicle design, safety and braking systems, dynamics and bogies) are supported by subjects on rolling stock environment and the design, construction and maintenance of rolling stock as an overall system. You will complete the following subjects in Rail Motive Power, Rail Vehicle Design, Rolling Stock Safety and Braking Systems, Rolling Stock Dynamics and Bogies, Rolling Stock Design, Construction and Maintenance and a research dissertation project.
