Bachelor of Computer Science

University of Wollongong

Type of institution: University/Higher Education Institution
Level: Undergraduate
CRICOS: 00102E

Computer scientists focus on the theoretical foundations and practical approaches to computation and its applications. They design methods and tools and write programs for computer applications. These applications can be in areas such as computer systems to control machinery, information management and big data, applications for mobile devices, stock market trend analysis, game design, visualisation of chemical reactions, neural network design, computational geometry for robot navigation, patient monitoring in hospitals, and much more.

Structure

3 years full-time or part-time equivalent. Students in their first year will study a common core of subjects that links our computer science, IT and information systems degrees before choosing a major. Students will complete 144 credit points including 90 credit points of core subjects, plus 24 credit points of major subjects, plus elective subjects to bring it up to 144. Students electing not to choose a major will need to choose 24 credit points from 200/300 level CSCI, CSIT, or ISIT subjects.

Subjects

  • Artificial intelligence & big data, Cyber security, Digital systems security, Game & mobile development, and Software engineering. If you do not wish to specialise in a major, you will complete advanced subjects providing you with specific knowledge while also instilling you with professional knowledge and skills in computer science. In the final year students develop their own application as part of an annual student team project, developing solutions to real-world problems provided by our industry partners.

Standard entry requirements

DOMESTIC STUDENTS - ATAR-BASED ADMISSION OPTIONSEntry to this course can be gained with: Minimum ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admission Rank), International Baccalaureate (IB), Interstate equivalent (such as Victoria’s ENTER or Queensland OP), Results in an overseas qualification deemed equivalent to Australian year 12.The minimum score for guaranteed entry (or for consideration if this course has limited places) is an ATAR-Selection Rank of 75 or an IB of 26. This includes the effect of adjustment factors. Adjustment factors, such as the subjects you are studying, the area in which you live or equity and access schemes, are taken into consideration and these will be combined with your ATAR to adjust your selection rank and make it higher than your ATAR. Find out more about UOW's adjustment factors. ASSUMED KNOWLEDGE AND RECOMMENDED STUDIESThe University assumes students will have studied any 2 units of English plus Mathematics Advanced. Ideally, students will have studied Mathematics Extension 1. INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS Applicants need to have achieved the required score in a qualification equivalent to the completion of 13 years of schooling in Australia. In order to succeed in your chosen course, it is assumed you have completed relevant subjects in your senior high school studies or other relevant qualifications. This is particularly important for degrees which have a strong basis in Mathematics or Science.

Recognition

The Bachelor of Computer Science is accredited by the Australian Computer Society as meeting requirements for membership at the "Professional" Level.

Study pathways

If applicants can demonstrate they have met the learning outcomes for UOW subjects through prior learning, such as previous tertiary or TAFE qualifications, they may be eligible for credit towards their degree. Where relevant to the UOW degree, specified credit may be given for specific subject(s); where not relevant to the degree, unspecified credit may be awarded.Upon successful completion of the UOW College Diploma of Information Technology, you will receive credit of 48 credit points towards a Bachelor of Computer Science (BCompSc) at UOW. You will be required to meet minimum subject requirements in order to progress from the Diploma of IT into the second year of a BCompSc.
