Bachelor of Pharmacy (Honours) / Master of Pharmacy

Monash University

Type of institution: University/Higher Education Institution
Level: Undergraduate
CRICOS: 00008C

This course is Australia's first combined Bachelor and Master of Pharmacy, offered by the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences (#4 in the world and #1 in the Asia-Pacific in the 2016 QS World University Rankings by Subject). The higher level qualification is designed to prepare the pharmacists of the future to meet the rapidly evolving challenges in one of Australia's most rapidly growing health care professions. Traditionally, pharmacy degrees in Australia have offered students a five-year pathway to apply to register as a pharmacist (generally a four-year bachelor degree plus a one-year internship). This new course will enable students to apply to register within the same five-year time frame, but offers them the additional advantage of doing so with a master's degree as well as a bachelor's. During the fifth year of the degree, students will complete the 48-week paid internship. This course aims to give students the knowledge, experience and expertise needed to make a difference from moment they graduate as a medicines expert and healthcare professional. The course incorporates innovative technology, such as MyDispense, a safe environment to learn about interacting with patients and other health professionals when dispensing medicines, and Pharmville, a whole database of fictional patients with 'real' health needs. Students gain work experience in hospitals, community pharmacies and rural settings; some students have worked with the Royal Flying Doctor Service or students might choose the International Experience Elective to practice pharmacy in the UK, USA or Singapore. Pharmacists make a difference to people's health in hospitals, aged-care facilities, local communities both locally and globally.

The standard duration of study for this course is 5 years full-time. Before starting placements in their third and fourth years, students will need to have met immunisation requirements and complete Police and Working with Children Checks.
