There are few areas of modern society where civil engineers have not had an impact. Civil engineers develop and maintain a wide variety of physical infrastructure such as bridges, buildings, airports, roads, railways, ports, mine sites, water and wastewater supply, treatment and reuse systems. They also help to maintain sustainable natural environments. This degree is designed to provide significant and substantial advanced knowledge of and skills in the field of Civil Engineering, obtained through a combination of coursework and research study.

To qualify for the Master of Engineering (Civil), a student must complete 72 units with a grade of P or NGP or better in each topic.

- Applicants must normally hold at least one of the following:
- The Flinders University Graduate Diploma in Engineering Science with a major in Civil Engineering
- Completion of year 1 topics in the Flinders University Master of Engineering Science, undertaking the Civil Engineering or Environmental Engineering Majors
- A relevant Bachelor of Engineering, Bachelor of Engineering Technology, Bachelor of Engineering Science
- An equivalent overseas qualification
