Yeronga State High School

Yeronga State High School

At Yeronga we focus on a holistic education that emphasises the development of the well-balanced young person who is empowered and wants to go out into the world and make a positive difference. We see it as our responsibility to provide numerous opportunities and programs for all students to find meaning, enjoyment and a sense of belonging and connection.

One of the most important decisions is deciding what high school to attend. Great schools and learning communities are formed on the basis of positive relationships, where student and teacher expectations are high and learning is taken seriously. At Yeronga SHS, our school vision ‘Quality Pathways to Success’ is the DNA that drives us forward. Yeronga is an exciting and vibrant school community who embrace a forward-thinking global perspective. All students and staff work together to uphold our values of quality, harmony and sustainability.

Curriculum

Year 7 and 8 students sample a range of subjects throughout the year. In Junior Secondary, the curriculum is organised around the Australian National Curriculum. Elective subjects include design technology, information digital technology, CEO — building a business, digi minds, music, visual arts, drama, food studies, manual arts and music performance. Students also study Chinese.

As students move into Year 9, they have an increased opportunity to select elective subjects for study. Although there is greater choice in Year 9, all students retain the core subjects of mathematics, English, science, HPE and humanities and social sciences. As students enter the senior phase of learning, we begin to offer greater flexibility in learning pathways to allow students to achieve a range of career and life goals.

The senior subjects offered at Yeronga State High School are either QCAA (Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority) developed or VET (Vocational Education and Training). The QCAA develops four types of senior subject syllabuses — general, applied, senior external examinations and short courses. Extension subjects are extensions of the related general subjects and are studied concurrently with Units 3 and 4 of the general course. Typically, it is expected that most students will complete these courses across Years 11 and 12. All subjects build on the P–10 Australian Curriculum.
