This program enables students to develop advanced skills in conducting independent and sustained research. The thesis should demonstrate a critical application of specialist knowledge and make an independent contribution to existing scholarship in that area of research.

Structure
Candidates are examined on the basis of their thesis (approx. 30,000-40,000 words). Candidates have a supervisor/s and an Advisory Committee who arranges a course of supervised research designed to suit the individual requirements and interests of the candidate. Candidates may be required to supplement their research program by attendance at, or enrolment in, additional subjects.

Standard entry requirements
- A four-year bachelors degree in a relevant discipline which includes a substantial research component equivalent to at least 25% of one year of full-time study, with a weighted average mark of at least 75%, or equivalent, in the final-year subjects
- Or a masters degree in a relevant discipline which includes a substantial research component equivalent to at least 25% of one year of full-time study, with a weighted average mark of at least 75%, or equivalent
- Or a qualification and professional experience considered to be equivalent
- And referee reports (except for applicants who have graduated from the University of Melbourne within the past five years)
- Endorsement of a prospective supervisor.
Study pathways
Students who complete the MPhil - Science with at least a H2A (75%) result will be eligible for consideration for PhD - Science.
