Bachelor of Medical and Radiation Physics

University of Wollongong

Type of institution: University/Higher Education Institution
Level: Undergraduate
CRICOS: 00102E

Medical and radiation physicists work in many different fields related to human health in order to improve quality of life. They are familiar with aspects of ionising and non-ionising radiation used for radiation medicine. They are familiar with various forms of therapeutic radiation oncology as well as different methods of diagnostic radiation imaging, and the mechanisms of how such radiation interacts with the human body. They are also familiar with exciting new radiation medicine technologies being developed for the continued improvement in the treatment of human diseases. Students will learn where medical physics matters most: in hospitals, clinics and nuclear science research facilities and gain knowledge in areas relating to nuclear medicine, radiotherapy physics, radiation transport physics modelling, detector and instrumentation physics, and data analysis.

Structure

Course structure: To qualify for award of the degree of Bachelor of Medical and Radiation Physics, students complete 144 credit points and satisfy all course requirements for the degree outlined in the course structure below.a) 132 credit points of core subjects and;b) 12 credit points of elective subjects chosen from the General Schedule.Students should consult with the Academic Program Director directly to help in planning out their program of study.

Standard entry requirements

DOMESTIC STUDENTS - ATAR-BASED ADMISSION OPTIONS Guaranteed entry selection ranks Entry to this course can be gained with: Minimum ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admission Rank) International Baccalaureate (IB) Interstate equivalent (such as the Victorian ENTER or Queensland OP) Results in an overseas qualification deemed equivalent to Australian year 12 The minimum score for guaranteed entry (or for consideration if this course has limited places) is an ATAR-Selection Rank of 80 or an IB of 29. This includes the effect of adjustment factors. Adjustment factors, such as the subjects you are studying, the area in which you live or equity and access schemes, are taken into consideration and these will be combined with your ATAR to adjust your selection rank and make it higher than your ATAR. These adjustments used to be called bonus points. Find out more about UOW adjustment factors here: https://www.uow.edu.au/future/school/apply/index.html ASSUMED KNOWLEDGE AND RECOMMENDED STUDIES The University assumes students will have studied any Mathematics Advanced, Physics, and any 2 units of English. Students with a limited background in physics are advised to enrol in the physics bridging course held in February each year. Ideally, students will have studied English Advanced, and Mathematics Extension 1. INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS Applicants need to have achieved the required score in a qualification equivalent to the completion of 13 years of schooling in Australia. In order to succeed in your chosen course, it is assumed you have completed relevant subjects in your senior high school studies or other relevant qualifications. This is particularly important for degrees which have a strong basis in Mathematics or Science.

Recognition

The Bachelor of Medical and Radiation Physics degree conforms to the requirements for membership of the Australian Institute of Physics and the Australasian College of Physical Scientists and Engineers in Medicine.

Study pathways

If applicants can demonstrate they have met the learning outcomes for UOW subjects through prior learning, such as previous tertiary or TAFE qualifications, they may be eligible for credit towards their degree. Where relevant to the UOW degree, specified credit may be given for specific subject(s); where not relevant to the degree, unspecified credit may be awarded.
