Medical and health science provides insight into the structure and function of the human body at all levels of organisation. This knowledge can be used directly to work alongside other health professionals within the medical research and clinical health fields in both private industry and hospital settings. It can also be used as an underpinning set of knowledge for postgraduate medicine, dentistry, and most other allied health professional areas. It is the Medical and Health professionals in their various roles that are involved in the development of therapies, application of diagnostic methods and treatments associated with health and disease.This degree is a flexible yet rigorous program designed specifically for students who wish to study the scientific basis of human structure, function, and health.The first year covers the core sciences including Human and General Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Physiology, and Anatomy. After studying the core science subjects there is the opportunity to customise individual programs of study with a wide selection of elective subjects that include: Pathophysiology, Pharmacology, Histology, Exercise and Cardio-Respiratory Physiology, more advanced Physiology and Anatomy subjects, Genetics, Molecular Biology, Immunology, Bioethics, Philosophy, Indigenous Studies, Public Health, Work Health and Safety and all specialised areas within chemistry, with potential to also create minors in many of these and other areas.

Structure

The Bachelor of Medical and Health Sciences requires the successful completion of 144 credit points of subjects as specified below.Students must not complete more than 60 credit points of 100 level subjects.Successful completion of the Bachelor of Medical and Health Sciences with a WAM of 75 for 24 credit points of subjects at 300 level (relevant to the program) enables students to apply for entry into the Bachelor of Medical and Health Sciences (Honours). For further information refer to the separate entry for Bachelor of Medical and Health Sciences (Honours).Students are encouraged to consider taking a minor study as part of this degree. Inclusion of a minor in support of your area of study allows you to broaden your view, knowledge and expertise while specialising in areas of interest.Students who have completed CHEM104 and CHEM105, and wish to enrol in any of the electives CHEM211, CHEM212 or CHEM213, must (a) have obtained marks of at least 80% in both CHEM104 and CHEM105, (b) complete additional directed study by two weeks before the start of the session in which the CHEM21X subjects are taken and (c) obtain permission of Head of Students. Standard entry requirements

Applicants need to have achieved the required score in a qualification equivalent to the completion of 13 years of schooling in Australia.

Study pathways

If applicants can demonstrate they have met the learning outcomes for UOW subjects through prior learning, such as previous tertiary or TAFE qualifications, they may be eligible for credit towards their degree. Where relevant to the UOW degree, specified credit may be given for specific subject(s); where not relevant to the degree, unspecified credit may be awarded. Honours is available as an additional year to high achieving students. An Honours (Dean's Scholar) program is also available.
