Exercise scientists look at the effect of exercise on human performance. They design, implement and evaluate exercise and physical activity for a wide range of people within the community. They provide programs for improving general health, the prevention of chronic diseases, health promotion and enhanced sports performance.This is a popular course undertaken by Global Sports Program students.You will study anatomy, physiology, exercise physiology, exercise prescription, nutrition, neuromechanics, and biomechanics as part of your core subjects. You will gain a basic understanding of the anatomical and physiological basis of human motion and the effect of exercise on human performance in sport, industry, aging and in healthy living.This degree also includes a workplace experience component that requires 140 hours of placement in a community, sporting, scientific or commercial exercise setting. Completion of these hours is required in order to graduate. This experience is an essential part of the learning process and will allow you to put into practice what you've learned in the course to ensure that you are work-ready as an exercise scientist. The course will prepare you for a career in sporting organisations, community health units, workplaces, and gymnasiums.

Structure

The Bachelor of Exercise Science requires the successful completion of 144 credit points of subjects as specified below.Your study program requires you to attend workplace experience or clinical placements within a range of health-related settings. Before you can commence a placement within a NSW Health facility, you must meet NSW Health’s mandatory requirements for police check, code of conduct and immunisation / vaccination.

Standard entry requirements

Applicants need to have achieved the required score in a qualification equivalent to the completion of 13 years of schooling in Australia.

Recognition

This course has full accreditation with Exercise and Sports Science Australia (ESSA). Graduates of the Bachelor of Exercise Science and Rehabilitation are eligible to apply for accreditation as Exercise Scientists with Exercise and Sports Science Australia (ESSA).

Study pathways

If applicants can demonstrate they have met the learning outcomes for UOW subjects through prior learning, such as previous tertiary or TAFE qualifications, they may be eligible for credit towards their degree. Students wishing to transfer into the professional 4-year Bachelor of Exercise Science and Rehabilitation degree program may apply for transfer upon completion of the second year of the program.
