On top of equipping you to teach in secondary schools across NSW, this four-year degree offers the chance to develop an expertise in subjects such as English, mathematics, history, drama, business studies (including commerce, economics and legal studies), and religious studies (including Catholic Religious Education and Studies of Religion).Fully accredited by the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA), your Bachelor of Secondary Education will provide you with the opportunity to teach at government, independent and Catholic high schools from years 7-12 throughout Australia and in many other parts of the world.Should you wish to pursue further studies, you can enrol in a number of our postgraduate programs, such the Graduate Certificate in Education (Special Needs), Master of Education (Special Needs) and the Graduate Certificate in Early Childhood Education. The Masters of Philosophy (Education) and Doctor of Education degrees, meanwhile, combine coursework with an independent research project.

Standard entry requirements

  • Applicants with recent Secondary Education: HSC Performance Band Results with a Band 4 in English, a minimum average of Bands 4s and an overall minimum average HSC mark of 75% in HSC Category A Courses (or Interstate equivalent). Applicants must be eligible for an ATAR or OP
  • Or Minimum International Baccalaureate (IB) score of 24. Applicants with Higher Education Study
  • Other University Studies completed at undergraduate level or higher. A minimum number of 4 successfully completed subjects
  • Or Successful completion of the Notre Dame Tertiary Pathway Program or of another Enabling Program at a level deemed sufficient by the University.

Recognition

The Bachelor of Secondary Education program is fully accredited by the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA), allowing you to teach at government, independent and Catholic schools across New South Wales. In addition, you will be approved to teach the Board of Studies secondary curriculum from Years 7 to 12 in the two subjects you choose.

Study pathways

Students may undertake the University's Tertiary Pathway Program and apply to enter the Primary Teaching Program at the end of their pathway program (entry is not guaranteed), or complete the STAT - Scores of 150 or higher in both the Multiple Choice and Written English sections are required.

Further information

All teacher Education students in NSW are required to enrol, pay and sit the national Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education Students (LANTITE) and demonstrate the required minimum level of personal literacy and numeracy prior to their final professional experience. Students are encouraged to sit the test early in their degree.
