Dux of the Class of 2019

The Kilmore International School Careers’ Counsellor, Ms Elizabeth McCormick received a telephone call, a call very few others in her field would receive. 2019 School Dux, Lachlan Heywood accepted a prestigious offer and scholarship from the Ivy League University of Pennsylvania and has been named as a Penn World Scholar.

Lachlan, Dux of the Class of 2019 and local Wallan resident, had received several offers to leading Australian and overseas universities . Lachlan has a place in Liberal Arts & Sciences at the University of Pennsylvania and has been named as a Penn World Scholar, one of 15 awarded each year to applicants who show outstanding leadership potential. Lachlan hopes to specialise in international economics and politics.

In 2018, he founded a youth auxiliary, Kids Can at the Royal Children’s Hospital (RCH) so young people could directly organise and develop their fundraising activities. This year he has been very active with UN projects and his auxiliary for young people at the RCH. For three years he was also member of INTERACT (school-based Rotary) and was recently President.

Lachlan says “Through the diversity of curriculum in the IB Program, I learnt the skills necessary to solve problems regardless of the academic discipline. By combining this with a wealth of extra‐curricular opportunities on offer, from sport to student conferences in London and Hong Kong, I developed skills that allowed me to succeed in high school and prepared me for later success in tertiary studies.”

As a recent, but highly respected TKIS Alumni, Lachlan is also now assisting the school’s 2020 Year 12 cohort who are preparing applications for the United States later this year.

The Kilmore International ready, future ready.
