As an RMIT electrical engineering and commerce double degree student you'll gain a combination of technical and business skills allowing you to develop electrical engineering solutions and understand the processes of commerce across many sectors. Electrical engineers specialise in the application and control of electrical energy. By understanding the processes behind the production and distribution of electricity, they can find better ways to utilise electrical power to meet the demands of modern living. To effectively manage large infrastructure projects, employers are increasingly looking for engineers with a solid understanding of business concepts as well as technical expertise. With these combined skills you'll be able to design solutions and understand the business incentives driving them. Graduates are well placed to become business leaders in future technologies for industries and the community.

Structure

Years 1, 2 and 3 - Your first three years introduce you to electrical engineering fundamentals including mathematics, physics and commerce. You'll also complete a work-integrated learning (industry experience) elective in Year 3 or 5. Years 4 and 5 - In the last two years you'll specialise in electrical energy and power systems, along with finance and management. A lot of your time will be spent in practical classes, developing your design and problem-solving skills. Your final-year (capstone) project will develop and reinforce the skills and knowledge you need - as defined by Engineers Australia - to commence your professional engineering career.

Standard entry requirements

  • Current Year 12 prerequisite units 3 and 4 - a study score of at least 20 in one of Mathematical Methods (any) or Specialist Mathematics
  • And a study score of at least 25 in any English (except EAL) or at least 30 in English (EAL).

Recognition

This program is fully accredited by Engineers Australia. Graduates of the program are eligible for graduate membership of Engineers Australia. Full membership as a professional engineer may be obtained after an appropriate period of professional practice. Australia is one of 15 countries that are signatories to the International Engineering Alliance, also known as the Washington Accord, for professional engineers. The qualification of graduates from this degree is recognised in all countries that are signatories to the Accord.
