Structure

To qualify for the award of Master of Teaching (Primary), students must complete 240 credit points of study in total, consisting of: 240 core credit points To be eligible to graduate students must complete supervised teaching practicum (60 days) as indicated in the course structure. All applicants completing an initial teacher education course are expected to sit and pass the Literacy and Numeracy Test for Teachers prior to completing their course.

Standard entry requirements

  • Postgraduate: Prerequisites - Course specific requirements - Specialisation - compulsory: In a relevant discipline area for primary teaching as per the National Program Standards and the Victorian Institute of Teaching. For a primary focus these may include
  • Science, Mathematics, Arts (Visual Arts/Drama/Music/Dance/Media Studies), Humanities (Geography, History), Languages, Physical Education/Health, English, IT.
  • Postgraduate: Prerequisites - Undergraduate requirements - Successful completion of an Australian bachelor degree (or equivalent).
  • International: IELTS - Course specific - 7.0 IELTS (Academic) with no individual band less than 7.0 and a score of no less than 7.5 in Speaking and Listening.

Recognition

The Master of Teaching (Primary) is accredited by the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT). Professional registration may require an application to the professional body and may have additional or ongoing requirements beyond the completion of the degree. Further information

Students are required to obtain a Working with Children Check prior to your first placement. As a result of new professional standards, all students will be required to complete an externally administered Literacy and Numeracy Test prior to graduation in order to be eligible to apply for registration with the Victorian Institute of Teaching. Students will have the opportunity for diagnostic tests and support during their studies to ensure they are at an appropriate standard prior to sitting the formal test.
