This program aims to train students in the key elements of biotechnology and the manipulation of molecular biological data. With a strong emphasis on embedding research skills, the course offers a wide variety of practical experiences in laboratory settings - including intensive short projects, industry visits, and multiple weekly practical sessions. The program also provides opportunities to develop communication and higher-order thinking skills, including analysis, critical inquiry and problem-solving. Second-year students undertake a year-long individual project as a member of a specialised research group, under the supervision of a scientific mentor.

Structure

The one-year full-time course requires the completion of 120 credit points. Subjects include Techniques in Biotechnology, Bioinformatics, Proteomics and Genomics, Bio-Business Management, Science Communication Skills, Skills in Science, and Practical Biotechnology.

Standard entry requirements

  • Australian Bachelor's degree or international equivalent containing at least two years (four semesters) of biology, and include the study of at least two semesters of biochemistry, microbiology, immunology, cell biology, genetics or biotechnology at second-year level or above
  • International students must meet the relevant academic and English language requirements
  • NB: Meeting minimum prerequisites does not guarantee an offer of a place. Entry into all La Trobe courses is based on competitive selection and there may be limited places available.

Study pathways

If students are enrolled in the Master of Biotechnology and Bioinformatics they can exit with a Postgraduate Diploma after completing their first year; only if they decide not to proceed to the second year.
