This three-year accredited graduate degree gives you the chance to build knowledge of the law from a global and social justice perspective. La Trobe focuses on developing your skills in critical thinking, analysis, advocacy, mediation and negotiation. In first year, you will cover dispute resolution and the principles of constitutional, tort, public and criminal law. Second and third year offer units on other aspects of the law including corporate regulation, property law, evidence and criminal procedure, statutory regulation, and legal practice and conduct. You can also attend La Trobe's winter school in Shanghai and summer school in Hong Kong or Geneva, and access summer and winter school electives from the Master of Laws in Global Business Law. You may gain practical experience through La Trobe's judicial mentoring program that allows you to spend a semester shadowing a judge or magistrate. You can also undertake supervised legal work in La Trobe's law clinic and at organisations like the Consumer Action Law Centre, the Office of Public Advocate and the Environmental Justice. La Trobe's moot court gives students more practical experience through simulated activities like witness examination, negotiation and client interviews. We also have an exchange program that gives students the chance to study with La Trobe's partner universities around the world. Bendigo students can transfer to Melbourne in third year or continue on at Bendigo through e-learning options.

Structure

You'll complete at least three years of full-time study or its equivalent (part-time study is only available to local students). You are required to complete: - compulsory law subjects in sequence - a total of 360 credit points in law subjects - a total of 24 law subjects (18 compulsory subjects and six electives). First year core law subjects are: Legal Institutions and Methods, Dispute Resolution, Contract Law A and B, Principles of Tort Law, Principles of Criminal Law, Principles of Public Law and Principles of Constitutional Law. Second and third years address other areas such as Foundations of Property Law, Real Property Law, Evidence and Criminal Procedure, Principles of Equity and Trusts, Statutory Interpretation, Principles of Administrative Law, Legal Practice and Conduct, Civil Procedure and Remedies.   • Successful completion of an Australian Bachelor's degree or equivalent
  • Applicants who have completed an undergraduate degree in a language other than English must submit an IELTS (or equivalent) test result with a minimum overall band score of 6.5 with no individual score less than 6.0. International students must meet the academic and English language requirements of this course and are required to provide a personal profile or curriculum vitae in addition to certified documentation. The personal profile should address areas such as work experience, achievements, any relevant personal circumstances, community involvement, and career goals. NB: Meeting minimum prerequisites does not guarantee an offer of a place. Entry into all La Trobe courses is based on competitive selection and there may be limited places available.

Recognition

All La Trobe University Bachelor of Laws and Juris Doctor law courses include the subjects required by the Victorian Legal Admissions Board to qualify for admission to the legal profession in Victoria as an Australian lawyer. Admission to the legal profession by the Supreme Court of Victoria also requires the completion of practical legal training either by a 12-month period of Supervised Legal Training or by completing an approved practical legal training course (for example, at the Leo Cussen Institute or The College of Law). Candidates for admission to practise must also satisfy the Admissions Board that they are a fit and proper person to be admitted to practise.
