Co-designed with leading industry experts, you'll learn core skills across every aspect of business accounting and then move beyond - into corporate finance, international finance, entrepreneurship, risk management and investment and portfolio management. Learn in a trading room equipped with Bloomberg Terminals, then use your access to obtain the Bloomberg Market Concepts (BMC) certificate. You'll learn: Financial and management accounting Recognise and apply the accounting principles that govern the preparation, presentation and communication of accounting information. Learn how to use accounting software to record business transactions. Security valuation and portfolio management Analyse financial information and value a range of financial securities using the Bloomberg Terminals. Construct an investment portfolio to meet investor goals and risk profiles. International financial markets Explain and critically evaluate the theories that underpin the operation of financial markets.

Structure

Students must complete at least 360 credit points. At least 330 credit points must be subjects offered by the Faculty of Business, Economics and Law. In first year students take four business foundation subjects, one subject specific to the accounting disciplinary core, one subject specific to the finance core and two elective subjects. The four business foundation subjects, Business Foundations, Accounting and Finance for Business, Business Economics, and Business Analytics, will introduce key business disciplines and work-ready skills. These skills will be further enhanced in second and third year with a subject in Sustainability and a capstone subject in Entrepreneurship, respectively. In addition to these common core subjects students will complete eight core subjects in accounting and eight subjects in finance over the three years of the degree.

Standard entry requirements

  • VCE Units 3 and 4: a study score of at least 25 in English (EAL) or at least 20 in English other than EAL
  • And a study score of at least 20 in any Mathematics. International students must meet the academic and English language requirements of this course. NB: Meeting minimum prerequisites does not guarantee an offer of a place. Entry into all La Trobe courses is based on competitive selection and there may be limited places available.

Recognition

The Bachelor of Business (Accounting & Finance) is accredited by CPA Australia and Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand (CAANZ), and the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA). Graduates of the Bachelor of Business (Accounting and Finance) may also apply for membership with the Institute of Public Accountants (IPA). Membership may require an application to the professional body and may have additional or ongoing requirements beyond the completion of the degree.
