This double degree is designed to prepare secondary school teachers and offer high achieving students additional challenging material to enable them to maximise their intellectual growth and potential. Students will be provided with the background and skills necessary to enter the teaching profession with confidence and competence. Students will gain knowledge of curriculum studies and education studies and undertake professional experience which brings together theory and practice in school settings. Students will study Education topics in all five years of the double degree, together with Bachelor of Science topics in the first three years. At the end of third year students will need to meet a minimum graduate point average requirement to progress on to the Master of Teaching topics in years four and five. On successful completion of this degree students will be able to teach junior secondary and secondary school subjects such as mathematics, information technology, chemistry, biology, earth sciences and physics; as well as a Humanities or Social Sciences subject up to year 10 in a school. This double degree also prepares students to be a scientist in a particular field of endeavour and furthermore enables them to adapt the scientific skills to a broad range of careers in addition to the teaching profession.

Structure

In years one to three students have an option to complete 2-3 teaching areas based on a major and a minor in two science areas from approved science subjects plus other science or liberal arts subjects. Students will also study education topics which include education studies, curriculum studies necessary for teaching science in secondary schools, and professional experience placements. Students are required to pass all topics of the Bachelor component of the double degree and achieve a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 5.0 (Credit average) in order to progress to the Masters component of the degree. Students who do not pass all topics and/or who fail to achieve the minimum GPA will transfer either to the Bachelor of Sciences.

Applicants must complete a non-academic assessment task as part of their application to demonstrate their motivation to teach, their strong interpersonal and communication skills, willingness to learn, resilience, self-efficacy, and strong organisational and planning skills.

Recognition

Upon successful completion you will be eligible to apply for registration with the Teachers Registration Board of South Australia. Graduates looking for employment in other parts of Australia and overseas may be required to meet additional conditions. Graduates meet Australian Children's Education and Care Quality Authority employment criteria.

Further information

All School of Education pre-service teachers must obtain a Child-Related Employment Screening before undertaking their Professional Experience. This is a requirement of the Department for Education and Child Development (DECD), in agreement with the Catholic Education and Independent Schools Boards. Pre-service teachers who are not cleared will therefore not able to complete the requirements of the course. The process is managed by the Department for Communities and Social Inclusion (DCSI) Screening and Licensing Branch. In addition, students must complete the Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education Students (LANTITE) prior to commencing the professional experience topics.
