Electronics is the enabling technology for today's society. It is embedded in most facets of life ranging from consumer goods to the sophisticated instrumentation used in electronic circuits, electronic devices, telecommunications and computer systems. Electronic engineers are involved in developing technology used in areas such as aircraft systems, media and sound broadcasting, traffic and urban management, medical equipment, robotics, broadband systems and scientific devices. The Bachelor of Engineering (Electronics) (Honours) provides students with the skills and knowledge to plan, design and build the electronic circuitry that is integral to so many high technology applications. There are numerous employment opportunities in some of the fastest growing areas of the economy including, defence, medicine, telecommunications, construction, manufacturing and mining. Examples of potential occupations include electronics engineer, engineering officer, electronics design engineer, project coordinator, high speed instrumentation officer, test engineer, radio communications engineer, research engineer and scientist.

Structure

The first year comprises of core topics in electronics, professional skills, engineering design, engineering programming, engineering physics and materials, engineering mechanics, and mathematics.Second year involves core topics in computer programming, electrical circuits and machines, engineering mathematics, automation and industrial control, microprocessors, analysis of engineering systems, electronic circuits, and sensors and actuators. Third year expands further in core topics in computer organisation and design, project management for engineering and science, control systems, signal processing, communication systems, and workplace preparation and also involves a a 20-week industry placement. This course also offers an honour year that comprises of a major electronics engineering honours thesis allowing high-performing students to progress to a higher degree by research, furthermore, topics in advanced electronic design, and standards, ethics and compliance and a selection of electives in allied science and engineering areas.
