Bachelor of Engineering - Electrical (Honours)

Flinders University

Type of institution: University/Higher Education Institution
Level: Undergraduate
CRICOS: 00114A

Electrical engineering is concerned with large scale electrical systems such as power supply, renewable power generation and motors. This differs from electronic engineering which is primarily concerned with small scale often lower voltage electronic systems such as computer systems, communication networks and integrated circuits. Students of Flinders' Electrical Engineering degree will be well rounded and capable of working across the electrical engineering industry, however they will also have the opportunity to focus on niche areas, which are renewable energy systems, including renewable technologies such as wind farms and electrical drive systems, such as those used on ships and submarines and on emission free vehicles. Students are taught how to develop electrical engineering solutions which are appropriate to the social, political, international, economic and environmental contexts to which they are applied. A range of industries and companies throughout Australia and internationally employ Electrical Engineers and some of these include Rio Tinto, BAE systems, BHP, Chevron, Xstrata, Parsons Brinckerhoff, Government transport departments and various power companies in each state.

Structure

This course contains study in fundamental science and engineering topics including design, engineering physics, materials and mechanics and mathematics, computer programming electrical circuits and machines, electrical energy systems, control systems, signal processing and sensors and actuators. It also includes a key topic in project management which is an essential skill for engineers and participate in Flinders nationally recognised 20 week industry placement. There is opportunity for this placement to be taken in Australia or overseas. In the final year students will complete further topics in engineering and undertake a major research project/thesis.
