This research course develops through the conduct of a supervised research project the ability of a suitably qualified candidate to contribute to the knowledge and practice of engineering. At the completion of the assigned project the candidate submits a written thesis presenting the results of their work and discussing the significance for the pertinent field of engineering. The thesis is examined according to the University's Regulations for the Degree of Master (by research) (refer to General Information section).

Structure

The topic for the research project is assigned to the candidate after consultation with the Head of Department. Students who are admitted subject to successful completion of a qualifying program enrol in one or both of the Master Qualifying Program units and undertake a specified program of study. On successful completion, students will qualify to proceed with the formal master program. Failure to attain a satisfactory standard in the qualifying units will render a student ineligible for re-enrolment in the master program.

Standard entry requirements

Specifically, applicants require a recognised bachelor of engineering degree at honours level. Applications will be considered from other well qualified graduates who are able to present acceptable evidence of their ability to undertake research projects. In such cases, admission may be subject to successful completion of a prescribed qualifying program.
