This program is designed to enhance the knowledge and practice skills of education, nursing, allied health and social work professionals to work with children and adolescents, through the therapeutic use of play. Students will gain knowledge about the many influences upon the wellbeing of children and the range of ways children respond to major life events and transitions. Throughout the course students will focus on the role of play in the lives of children, how it is affected by developmental events and how play can be used to access understanding, emotions and healing. Students will acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to work effectively with children, and how to access their understanding to the extent consistent with age, maturity and circumstances.

The program consists of 4 units of study and will deepen knowledge of the development of play over childhood and across cultures.

Standard entry requirements

  • Successful completion of a recognised Bachelor degree or equivalent in the fields of education, medicine, nursing, allied health, psychology or social work. All applicants must be registered with the relevant professional body in the field of their completed degree
  • Criminal History Check: Students must have cleared a Police Check and/or Working With Children Check before they can undertake some of the assignments.

Recognition

Completion of the course will enable Individuals to apply for membership of the Australasia Pacific Play Therapy Association.
