This program provides an opportunity to develop an understanding of and respect for Indigenous knowledges and the engagement of Indigenous people in the culture of academic research. Students are familiarised with and develop an understanding of key issues surrounding, and protocols related to, research by and with Indigenous people. Research projects are drawn from both the requests of Indigenous community leaders, the involvement of academics in current research projects and community led projects and their subsequent related and independent interests. Special focus is placed upon Indigenous peoples engagement in the economic use and management of land and water resources, exploration of the policy environment within which Indigenous people operate, issues of language and cultural maintenance and development.

Structure

Successful completion requires the submission of a thesis (50%) and the completion of associated coursework in research theory and practices in preparation for engagement in primary research activities.

Standard entry requirements

A recognised Bachelor degree or equivalent in an Indigenous Cultures, Indigenousness, Social Sciences or Natural Resource Management discipline or field with at least a credit average, including completion at credit level or above of undergraduate units or equivalent in the proposed field of Honours study
