Where are the best places to work in Australia in 2020?

Wondering where you should start your job search in Australia? The latest edition of 50 Best Places to Work is an excellent place to start, with insights into a company’s culture,  how they look after their employees, what companies promote from within and perhaps most importantly, how they showed leadership during the disruption caused by COVID-19. 

The report is created by Great Place to Work Australia, a global workplace research and consulting firm. The report is created based on research conducted by surveys and evaluation of a company’s policies and procedures. Basically, you find out from employees themselves what makes these companies so great to work for. 

The report is broken down into three different categories based on the number of employees in each company: 1,000 or more employees, 100– 999 employees, and 100 or fewer employees. 

1,000+ employees 

The average large company in this report is around 35 years old, with 80% being in the public sector and 20% in private. Around 90% of staff are employed on a full-time basis.  

With a staff size of 1,330, first place goes to worldwide technology leader Cisco Systems Australia, who develop tech equipment for consumers and other businesses. Cisco takes pride in a culture that promotes and encourages personal and professional development.

100–999 employees 

72% of mid-sized companies are in the private sector, 24% public and 4% are not-for-profit. Around 85% of staff are employed on a full-time basis. Revenue growth is reported at 47%, and job growth is 15%. 

Top spot goes to multi-service IT provider, Interactive — Australia’s largest privately owned IT company. The report says that during COVID-19, Interactive were dedicated to replicating people’s experiences in a physical office in a way that translates to remote working.

100 or fewer employees 

80% of companies with less than 100 employees are in the private sector and around 85% of staff are employed on a full-time basis.  

The top spot went to SC Johnson & Son, an American company with an Australian team of just 54 people. Their mission is ‘to develop and market products that are environmentally sound and do not endanger the health and safety of consumers and users’.
