Banking
Banking facilities and automatic teller machines (ATMs) are available throughout Australia. Banks provide internet and telephone banking services. Opening hours are generally 9.00am to 5.00pm Monday to Friday, with some banks opening on Saturday mornings. You can cash travellers’ cheques at any bank and most credit cards are accepted throughout the country.
You should open a bank account as soon as you arrive in Australia to ensure that you have easy access to money to pay your rent, bills and course fees, and so your employer can directly deposit your pay if you choose to work.
Australia’s currency is the Australian dollar. There are bank notes for $5, $10, $20, $50 and $100, gold-coloured coins for $1 and $2 and silver-coloured coins for 5 cents, 10 cents, 20 cents and 50 cents.
