University of Tasmania - Study Abroad

Imagine studying on an island with majestic mountains, lush temperate rain forests, wild rivers, rolling pastures and white sandy surf beaches.

Add to that natural environment two lively, cultured cities and a population of around 500,000 and you have Tasmania!

Where else in the world can you live and experience the best of city life and then drive less than an hour to ski in the mountains, stroll through the rainforest or surf at the beach? Tasmania provides the best of both worlds!

Two Cosmopolitan Cities

Hobart is the capital and largest city in Tasmania, yet it is free from overcrowding, traffic congestion, serious pollution and major crime. Situated close to the mouth of the Derwent River and nestled in the foothills of Mount Wellington, it seems that nearly every home, office and classroom has a magnificent view. Every Saturday morning hosts Salamanca Market – an open air market offering a wide variety of fresh fruits and vegetables, original artwork, Tasmanian woodcrafts, genuine leather goods, and sidewalk entertainment performed by local artists and musicians.

Launceston is the major city to the north of the state surrounded by vineyards and is conveniently located near Devonport, a port city on the north coast, which provides easy access to Melbourne by two superfast luxury ships. Launceston also offers a wide range of shopping centres, theatres, cinemas, restaurants and clubs. The Gorge is popular for its outdoor concerts in summer. In both Hobart and Launceston you are always meeting someone new, yet often bump into someone you know.

The University of Tasmania

The University of Tasmania is nationally and internationally renowned as a centre of academic excellence. Founded in Hobart in 1890, it is the fourth oldest university in Australia. In 1991 the University merged with the Tasmanian State Institute of Technology in Launceston to form the new University of Tasmania – a vibrant educational institution which combines many century-long traditions of academic excellence with the energy and dynamism of a modern institute of technology.

The result today is a comprehensive university with over 16,000 students including approximately 1,850 international students from 72 countries, which offers both undergraduate and postgraduate programs of study.

The University of Tasmania offers study abroad students an array of courses to choose from in the Faculty of Arts, Faculty of Business, Faculty of Education, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Health Sciences (not including Medicine units) and the Faculty of Science, Engineering and Technology. Courses also include classes which focus specifically on the environment, wildlife, art and history of Tasmania and are complemented by field excursion to some of Tasmania’s National Parks and World Heritage Areas. These field studies are integral to each course and will allow students to gain a glimpse of what makes Tasmania such a distinctive location as well as provide a real hands-on educational experience.

Scholarships

The University of Tasmania offers five A$1,000 scholarships to Study Abroad students each year. Eligibility is based on academic record and interest in the University of Tasmania as a study abroad destination. Applicants interested are required to submit a 500 word essay on why they would like to study in Tasmania. However, exchange students are not eligible for the scholarship.
