University of Tasmania Foundation Studies Program


Founded in 1890, the University of Tasmania is the fourth oldest University in Australia. UTAS offers international students a Foundation Studies Program to prepare those who do not meet the university’s usual undergraduate admission requirements.
The course is an intensive 22-hour per week program over 32 weeks commencing in March and October each year, which prepares students for entry in to a wide range of undergraduate degree programs.
The program is taught on campus by university lecturers and trained secondary teachers. Students have access to all University facilities – cafeteria, a restaurant, sports centre, computer laboratories, libraries, travel and medical centres, and a full range of social clubs and activities.

The Foundation Studies Program is designed to:

Prepare students academically for their degree programs as they become familiar with university study requirements and their areas of future study.

Raise the English language skills of students to the level required for university admission.

Teach students specific study skills to help them cope with university.
English language requirements
Applicants whose previous study has not been in English need to provide results of an approved English Language test.
IELTS: minimum overall band 5 with no band less than 5
Or
TOEFL (paper based): 520/ TWE 3
TOEFL (computer based): 173 with essay writing of at least 3.5
TOEFL (internet based): 68 with no score less than 14
Students who require more English are encouraged to enrol in a pre-foundation studies course at the English Language Centre, such as intensive Academic English and IELTS test preparation.

A full range of accommodation options including homestay, student colleges and residences on-campus, self-catered university apartments, and shared housing off-campus are available to Foundation Studies Students.
Degree course entry
Students who pass the Foundation Studies Program are guaranteed entry into a degree course at this University. Please note that Pharmacy degree programs have limited places available and entry is merit based and not guaranteed on achieving the required score.
