Founded in 1850, the University of Sydney is Australia’s first university and its leading research institution. Our continual rise in global rankings confirms the University’s place among the top forty universities in the world. The UK’s Times Higher Education Supplement (THES) World University Rankings, published in October 2006, placed our humanities teaching and research fifth best in the world, while the University as a whole was ranked 35th in the world. In the Newsweek global poll for 2006, the University of Sydney was one of only two Australian universities placed in the top 50 in the world. The University offers the widest range of courses and subjects of any Australian University, therefore Study Abroad and Exchange students participate in classes alongside Australian students for either one semester or one year.

The Program currently includes students from the USA, Canada, Germany, Norway, Sweden, Hong Kong, The Netherlands, Denmark, Austria, Switzerland, Korea, France, Mexico, Britain and more. An extensive range of Units of Study is offered, many of which have an emphasis on Australian Studies and the Pacific region. The Program covers a broad range of units of study, both undergraduate and postgraduate, in the following areas:

Assistance for International Students

The International Office and International Student Support Unit (ISSU) ensure that international students receive detailed assistance during their stay in Sydney including:

  • help in finding temporary and permanent housing

  • academic advice and administration

  • organised social activities

  • trips outside Sydney

  • disability and counselling services

  • welfare and health services

  • free language support

The University provides on-arrival assistance and an orientation program. Details of all services are sent to students before the start of semester. Enrolment into units of study occurs prior to students’ arrival. The normal full-time load at the University is 24 credit points per semester - this is equlivant to 30 ECTS credits or 15-16 US Credit hours. Outbound Student Exchange Program

The University of Sydney has an extensive range of Student Exchange Programs with universities throughout the Asia- Pacific, Canada, Europe, Scandinavia, the United Kingdom, Latin America and the United States of America. These programs allow participating undergraduate and graduate students to incorporate an overseas study period into their degree program without having to extend their degree or pay for overseas tuition fees.
