University of New South Wales (UNSW) - Study Abroad - Student Profile - Matthias Scherf

Name: Matthias Scherf

University: RWTH Aachen

"My Semester at UNSW was a unique experience and one of the most challenging in my life. I got in touch with an amazing city, the wide open character of the Australians and a totally different study system than we have in Germany.

To explore Sydney, the Australian way of life and to study at the same time made the months here very intense. Every day increased the efficiency of using my time between sunrise and sunset more and more. Here I had my first nighter, great cooking evenings and parties with my fantastic roommates after I surfed in the morning and learned in the 24hr Computer Labs. Carpe Diem et Noctem!

The organisational structure of the UNSW helped me to gain the most out of my classes, especially e-learning, the library, computer access and the motivation of my tutors. They are not just interested in catching your attention but also in brief explanations of how the world moves. In a serious and playful way one of the lecturers in the School of Photovoltaic and Renewable Energy Engineering taught us about energy changes not just by real problems but also by the mystic forces in Star Wars. Another lecturer explained Microeconomics so well that it was not important to read the textbook anymore. The class that widened my knowledge the most was in the School of Chemical Engineering, Experimental Design – Process Industries. Based on statistics you learn how to design experiments and analyze the results - a fundamental class for everyone who is interested in research.

But it was not just my studies that made the four month at UNSW so interesting. I also made good friends from all over the world - some locals, some from Iran, India, China and the US, some from Venezuela and Bulgaria and of course some from Germany and Austria. It makes me sad that time ran so fast and the semester is already over. Finally Sydney became a new home even though I still love Aachen.

It was a great time! A time to breathe, a time to increase… knowledge, my experiences, my understanding of different cultures and so much more!

I will definitely come back again!"
