Why did you choose to study in Australia?
I wanted a change from the style of education in Hong Kong, I wanted to move away from home and be independent. I went to an Education Expo in Hong Kong and decided that UNSW Foundation Year in Sydney would be ideal.

My father accompanied me to Sydney and helped me find a flat after just a few days. I had no difficulty at all in settling in. I made friends in Foundation and in fact my best friend also studied Biotechnology and Honours as well with me.

What are the best things about your course?
Looking back, I appreciate Foundation for the small classes where each student had a lot of attention and help from the teachers. I found the teachers very nice and still have fond memories of them. I think it was a great advantage that classes were held on UNSW campus as in this way students became used to university life.

How will your course in Australia help your future plans or career?
I am currently in the second year of my PhD program studying tissue engineering and biomaterials. The work aims to develop organs and tissues in a laboratory that could be used to replace organs in transplants. I really enjoy working at the cutting edge of this new technology. I have not as yet decided on future directions, perhaps in research, but as I also studied Innovation Management, I could be well-equipped as well to enter the commercial world of Science.

Have you been involved in other activities?
I was a class representative and enjoyed helping the student advisors organise events, such as abseiling, the sport students voted to undertake during my Foundation year. I started judo as a white belt at UNSW and now represent not only the University but also the State. I hope to gain my black belt before I finish university.

What advice do you have for other students?
My advice to prospective Foundation students is to study hard but also explore more while you have the opportunity to travel around Australia and understand more about different cultures.

I was interested in becoming a more rounded person, I studied, but as well participated fully in other activities and was enthusiastic about the many different facets of university life.
