The Faculty of Economics and Commerce has been a pioneer in business education since its foundation in 1924. Today, it stands as the leader in the research and teaching of commerce among Australian universities and is well-recognised around the world.

Undergraduate Studies
The New Generation Bachelor of Commerce features the opportunity to undertake majors in accounting, actuarial studies, business, economics, finance, management and marketing. Accounting and actuarial studies programs are professionally recognised.
Melbourne Graduate School of Management
Graduate programs at the Faculty are taught through the Melbourne Graduate School of Management, and many are open to graduates from any discipline background. Students can choose high quality professional or research programs in accounting, business and IT, economics, finance, human resource management, international business, management and marketing.

All academic departments are ranked top three in Australia in their disciplines, in a study of teaching and research quality undertaken by the Melbourne Institute.

Major journals that are edited from within the Faculty include: Accounting and Finance, Australian Economic Review, and Economic Record.

The Faculty regularly attracts visiting Nobel prize recipients and currently hosts Professor Sir James Mirrlees, (Cambridge University) Nobel Laureate in Economic Science in 1996. Other visiting Nobel Laureates have included Professor Robert E. Lucas Jr (University of Chicago), Nobel Laureate in Economic Science in 1995 and Professor Sir Clive Granger, (University of California) the 2003 Nobel Laureate in Economic Science.

Scholarships for international students
The Faculty offers many scholarships for international students in undergraduate degrees, coursework masters and research programs. Scholarships are awarded each semester, based on academic merit.
Scholarships range from 25–100% tuition fee remission and some include living allowances. In 2009, up to 32 undergraduate scholarships and 25 graduate coursework scholarships will be awarded.
Separate applications for scholarships are not required. All students who have applied by the closing date and who meet entry requirements are automatically considered.
