Higher Education
The University of Newcastle is located on the east coast of Australia, two hours drive north of Sydney. It is a comprehensive, international university ranked in the top 10 of Australia’s research institutions, the top 60 Asian Pacific universities and the top 200 universities in the world. It has a student body of approximately 27,000, including some 6,000 international students. The University offers undergraduate and postgraduate programs through five faculties:

The University operates on two main campuses. The largest, set on a 140 hectare natural bushland site is at Callaghan, about 12 kilometres west of the Newcastle central business district. The other is located on a picturesque 85 hectare site at Ourimbah on the Central Coast about half way between Newcastle and Sydney. The University’s Conservatorium of Music, Legal Centre and Graduate School of Business are all located in Newcastle’s central business district.
Undergraduate study
Undergraduate programs include Medicine, Engineering, Law, Science, Business, Teaching, Architecture, Nursing, Arts, Information Technology, Communications, Fine Art and many more.
Undergraduate programs are offered on a semester basis and usually require study for a period of three to five years, depending upon the program.
For students who would like to enrol in an undergraduate program, the University has developed a special preparatory program called the International Foundation Program.
Postgraduate study
Research higher degrees from Master to PhD are offered through each of the faculties. Whether it be in biomedical science, sociology, information technology, electrical engineering, environmental systems or public health, the University supports the highest quality research and is committed to its global quest to attract the very best researchers.
The University hosts several research centres including a number of Commonwealth Research Centres in diverse fields including biotechnology, construction innovation, mining and asthma. Each of the faculties also offers a wide range of postgraduate coursework programs on campus, by distance, online or in combinations of all three.

GraduateSchool.com Pty Ltd delivers the University’s online postgraduate coursework programs. Using interactive software developed by the University, it is now recognised as a leader in the field, offering one of the most flexible, student focused, and least complicated delivery systems in Australia. Over 1,500 students from countries such as Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, India and the US as well as Australia are currently enrolled.
English language courses
The University’s Language Centre’s ELICOS programs consist of five or 10-week sessions beginning with an Elementary English course which leads to courses in Intermediate English, Upper Intermediate English, Advanced General English and English for Academic Purposes.
Initial entry into these courses is determined by a placement test at the time of enrolment at the Language Centre. Each course has a minimum of 25 hours tuition a week and textbooks for all these courses are lent free of charge to students during their period of study.
Libraries
The University libraries offer a wide range of materials in a variety of formats – from traditional books and serials to films, multimedia and networked information from around the world. Highly skilled staff assist students to use the local collections and find information on special topics. A library coordinator for international students offers specialist support.
Computing facilities
Every student is provided with an email account. The University offers a campus-wide, fibre optic network that provides access to several online specialist and public domain information services. Access to internet services can be gained through the University’s libraries as well as discipline-based computing networks. Both campus libraries offer wireless internet connections. The university is currently installing campus-wide wireless networks for student use.
Accommodation
The University recognises the importance of secure, affordable and comfortable accommodation and offers both on-campus and off-campus accommodation options. There are four residential colleges on the Callaghan Campus in Newcastle, and one smaller college on the Ourimbah Campus. The University offers a homestay service, which provides you with an opportunity to live in a home with an Australian family. The University can also arrange temporary accommodation for your arrival and provides a free accommodation service to assist you in your search for off-campus accommodation.
