Swinburne University of Technology - TAFE Division - Student Profile - Wellington Ngondu

Student name: Wellington Ngondu

Student program: Diploma of Hospitality (Management )
Country of origin: Kenya

Wellington decided to study the Diploma of Hospitality (Management) because he wants to become a chef and manage his own restaurant one day. He also liked the idea of coming to study in Australia for a few years.

“Doing this course is giving me the skills to be able to manage a restaurant. The staff are extremely helpful with assisting me to meet my goals. They are not like ‘teachers’, because they have fun with us while they are teaching us.”

He chose to come to Swinburne because some of his friends recommended it, and because it has a reputation as a practical institution. He also loves the location of the Prahran campus.

“It is a good institution and you can achieve the goals that you want very easily, with the support from the teachers. They really care about what we learn.

“Swinburne’s location is very convenient. My friends have graduated here also and I like what we’ve been able to achieve while we are here. We get opportunities to do things that I don’t believe we would get to do anywhere else.”

Throughout their Hospitality studies at Swinburne, students also gain valuable practical experience through front and back-of-house duties at Swinburne's two training restaurants. The practical component includes on-the-job training in our restaurants in both cookery and food and beverage service. The theory components may include site visits, online delivery, self-paced materials and case studies.
