The University of Tasmania's English Language Centre has developed a number of English language programs to meet the needs of students preparing for university study. Lessons are designed to be interesting and enjoyable. The Centre is an excellent choice for students who want to quickly improve their English language skills to commence university study.
About Us
The English Language Centre is located in attractive surroundings on campuses at Hobart and Launceston. Students at the English Language Centre have use of all UTAS facilities - cafeteria, cafés, sports centre, computer laboratories, libraries, travel and medical centres, and a full range of social clubs and activities. Both campuses offer an enjoyable and safe environment for study. They are set in beautiful landscaped grounds a few kilometres from the city centre and most students are able to live within walking distance of the English Language Centre.

Courses
Pathway English
Pathway English provides a multi-level intensive English course for elementary to advanced learners. According to level, class content combines both General English and Academic English skills including practice in the following areas: listening, speaking, reading, writing, vocabulary and grammar knowledge and usage. Academic language skills are introduced from the first level of the course and become more intensive as students' language proficiency increases. Courses are available from 5-50 weeks.
Intensive test preparation
Excellent preparation and practice for the IELTS exam is provided by a range of short courses. The English Language Centre is Tasmania's only IELTS test centre and tests are held throughout the year.
Direct Entry Academic Program (DEAP)
DEAP is for students who have met the academic requirements for entrance to an undergraduate degree, postgraduate degree or research higher degree (Masters or PhD) at the University of Tasmania. Students gain direct entry to their degree upon successful completion of DEAP (excluding Medicine).
- 20-week program if entering with writing at 5.0 with no band below 4.5
- 15-week program if entering with an overall IELTS of 5.5 with no band below 5.0
- 10-week program if entering with an overall IELTS of 5.5 with no band below 5.5.
Cambridge First CELTA
The Cambridge Certificate of English Language Teaching to Adults (CELTA) is probably the most widely recognised international qualification in the field
of English language teaching or TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages). CELTA is currently offered at the Hobart campus.
English plus Special Interest (Study Tours)
If a group of students wishes to visit Tasmania, the English Language Centre can design a program that combines English language study with tours of the local region.
Accommodation
The English Language Centre offers a full range of affordable accommodation options including homestay, student colleges and residences on-campus, self-catered university apartments, and shared housing off campus. The cost of living in Tasmania is generally lower than other Australian States.
