The Friends' School is a coeducational day and boarding school founded in 1887 and based on Quaker values. Friends' has a strong academic record supported by recognition of the need to provide pastoral care at all levels of the school. Friends' is an International Baccalaureate school at Years 11 and 12.
About Us
Located 2km from the centre of Tasmania's capital city, Friends' is encircled by the beauty of Hobart's mountain, bushland and estuary setting, yet is still close to the city's galleries, university, commercial centre and seat of government. The North Hobart site of the school is developed around Hobartville, a building dating back to the 1830s. While we're fortunate to have maintained much of the historic fabric of our Argyle Street and Commercial Road campuses, building developments at Friends' keep pace with contemporary educational needs. Students and staff enjoy the bright new library and classrooms at Clemes; the new music, drama and art areas; and the Farrall Centre, the school's brand new performing arts facility.
Friends Health and Fitness - with swimming pool, tennis courts, gymnasium and aerobics room - is situated next to the school. The school also has outdoor sporting facilities nearby as well as an environmental studies centre near Orford, on Tasmania's east coast, and the Far South Wilderness Camp at Strathblane, on the doorstep of Tasmania's magnificent Southwest National Park.
Student Services
Friends' offers on-campus accommodation for regional, interstate and international students in a comfortable, modern environment. International students are met at the airport upon arrival and transferred to their accommodation at Walker House. Walker House is a home-like student residence where each student has their own room and lives and works with a group of students their own age.
Walker House staff provide all meals, cleaning and major laundry. Academic staff are on hand to assist students with their studies and to help students settle in to their new community. Walker House is located on the school campus and is only a short walk to classrooms and other facilities. Friends' provides intensive English language tuition for those students who require it at no additional cost.
Each student is issued with an Apple laptop for personal and study use throughout their stay at Friends'. All parts of our campuses are connected to a wireless network.
Courses
Friends' is an International Baccalaureate school offering a full range of IB Diploma subjects. Our average IB score of 34/45 compares very favourably with schools from around the world. We have small class sizes - allowing teachers to spend more time with individual students to assist them to maximise their study opportunities - and a rich history of helping students reach their potential.
