The university was awarded five-star ratings for 'Teaching Quality', 'Staff Qualifications' and 'Graduate Satisfaction' by The Good Universities Guide 2011. At Swinburne, we help our students to become self-sufficient, resourceful and employable by providing a challenging and supportive educational environment. Swinburne is ranked in the top 500 universities in the world in the prestigious Shanghai Jiao Tong Academic Ranking of World Universities. We are also the only Australian university invited to be a member of the European Consortium of Innovative Universities (ECIU), which aims to foster student and staff mobility and give students a competitive edge in today's global employment market.
Student Services
Swinburne has channelled significant investment into major refurbishments and new infrastructure at all of our campuses. The development of new buildings, renovation of existing buildings and landscaping have enhanced the study environment and educational experience we offer our students. Cutting-edge new buildings include a student services building and the $140 million Advanced Technologies Centre at the Hawthorn campus. We offer supportive, secure and peaceful environments with state-of-the-art multimedia lecture theatres, many brandnew buildings, well-stocked libraries, up-todate computer labs and wi-fi connectivity - as well as on-campus accommodation at Hawthorn and Lilydale - so our students get the most out of their studies.
Courses
Swinburne's ELICOS program, delivered by Swinburne College at the Hawthorn campus, gives you an opportunity to learn from qualified teachers, practise your English with students from all around the world and prepare for entry to other Swinburne programs. Our English language courses range from elementary to advanced levels. We have a new intake every five weeks, so you can start when it suits you. You will study for between five and 50 weeks, depending on your current level of English and whether you want to continue with further study.
General English
General English extends your basic knowledge of grammar and vocabulary and focuses on increasing your confidence in speaking English. Classes include reading, writing and grammar, listening and communication skills and supervised independent learning.
English for academic purposes
English for academic purposes prepares you for direct entry to Swinburne. Level 4 introduces you to the language and study skills required for tertiary studies, while Level 5 is designed to equip you with the language skills specific to your study area - such as design, business or IT. You will develop your skills in essay writing and other academic tasks, reading complex texts, communication, listening and giving oral presentations.
Intensive English
If you have already achieved the English requirements for your course, we recommend you take an optional five-week intensive program specifically designed to refresh your English language skills and prepare you for academic study before you begin your course.
